The Garden Path Homemade Soap Story: From Homemade Soap to Farm-Based Agritourism
From our humble beginnings in 2009, when Founder and CEO Tara MacWhirter began making homemade soap as a hobby, Garden Path Homemade Soap has grown into a thriving natural products and agritourism destination near Vankleek Hill, Ontario. Today, we create more than 50 different products, all homemade in our production facility on our 5-acre heritage farm.
We take pride in creating natural, handmade products that our customers love and trust. From our homemade soaps and botanical products to the plants and flowers grown on our farm, everything we do is rooted in a passion for nature, education, creativity, and the beauty of rural Ontario.
From a Laundry Room Hobby to a Growing Ontario Brand
Tara started making soap in her laundry room as a hobby, experimenting with ingredients and developing her craft one batch at a time. Before long, she decided to take a chance and introduce her homemade soap at a few local markets and craft fairs.
What began as a small hobby slowly grew into a business. As customers discovered and fell in love with Tara’s handmade products, the product line expanded and Garden Path Homemade Soap began to grow into the brand it is today.
Living on a rural property also provided an unexpected source of inspiration. Tara noticed that many of the herbs and flowers growing in the organic gardens on the farm could be incorporated into natural products. She began planting more, growing a wider variety of botanicals, and finding new ways to connect the farm, the garden, and the products made on site.
That passion eventually led Garden Path Homemade Soap beyond soapmaking and into agritourism creating an opportunity for visitors to experience our farm, gardens, natural products, and educational programs firsthand.
A Farm Experience Rooted in Education
Over the years, many students and staff have learned, and moved on, but our friendly team remains committed to creating a welcoming and memorable experience for every visitor.
Education plays a key role in our business model — and that comes naturally to Tara, who was a teacher before becoming an entrepreneur and soap maker.
Whether you're interested in learning about monarch butterflies, natural handmade products, gardening, native plants, or the herbs and flowers we grow on our farm, there is always something new to discover at Garden Path Homemade Soap.
